In fact, it\u2019s becoming increasingly prevalent among younger folks \u2013 thanks in large part to technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Affects Everybody<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/hearingsb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/technology-office-desk.jpg\" alt=\"desk covered with devices\" class=\"wp-image-3647\" title=\"Technology and hearing loss\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hearingsb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/technology-office-desk.jpg 640w, https:\/\/hearingsb.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/technology-office-desk-256x170.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s natural to lose some hearing ability as we age, but only a third of the population suffering a hearing impairment in Santa Barbara are over the age of 65.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More and more, <a title=\"hearing loss | Hearing Services of Santa Barbara\" href=\"https:\/\/hearingsb.com\/hearing-loss\/\">hearing loss<\/a> is affecting the younger generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a title=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention | cdc.gov\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC) estimates that noise-induced hearing loss affects 17 percent of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we are exposed to sounds exceeding 85 decibels for extended periods of time, damage occurs to the hair cells in the inner ear that are responsible for transmitting signals to the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The louder the sound, the less safe exposure time you have; at 85 decibels it will take about eight hours for significant damage to occur, but at 100 decibels, you are only safe for about 15 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger people don\u2019t always understand the link between loud noise and hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most cases of noise-induced hearing loss are the result of persistent exposure to loud music, and a majority of that blame goes toward the popularity of earbuds, smartphones and streaming apps \u2013 all of which allow people to listen to music pretty much anywhere they please and for as long as they like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These devices aren\u2019t the only causes of hearing loss in younger people.
