Sounds are measured in decibels (dB). Anything over 85 dB can cause hearing loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exposure to sound over <strong>85 dB<\/strong> can cause damage within <strong>8 hours<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to sound over <strong>100 dB<\/strong> can cause damage within <strong>15 minutes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to sound over <strong>120 dB<\/strong> can cause damage <strong>instantly<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution? Avoiding the noise all together. Known medically as exostosis but referred to informally as surfer\u2019s ear, this condition causes bone to thicken, leading to a narrowing (and occasionally, a complete blockage or \u201cocclusion\u201d) of the ear canal. It can result in significant conductive hearing loss over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swimmer\u2019s plugs are made of a waterproof silicone, which provides a tight, waterproof seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hunter\u2019s Plugs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who fires a gun \u2013 typically hunters, law enforcement officials and gun enthusiasts \u2013 put their hearing at risk every time they pull the trigger. A single gunshot can cause permanent, irreversible hearing loss. A gunshot measures around 140 dB; that is louder than a jet engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where specially-designed earplugs come into play.
